To provide a safe and non-judgmental environment, we have developed the following set of guidelines for group members. These guidelines are not intended to be restrictive; rather, they are principles which optimize the support group process.
- During the Orientation phase, groups may welcome visitors so they may have the opportunity to experience the support group environment.
- Group members are expected to attend regularly. Group members should notify their facilitator(s) or another class member if they will be absent. Also, if members decide to leave the group, they are encouraged to inform a facilitator of their decision to prevent any unnecessary worry or concern over a continued absence.
- Participants are expected to arrive on time and stay for the entire session. Group participation enhances the opportunities to both seek assistance from fellow group members as well as become a source of strength to the group.
- Participants will treat as confidential any information of a personal nature which is shared in group discussions by participants or facilitators. Group phone or e-mail lists are confidential documents and will not be shared outside of the support group.
- While participation is highly encouraged, each person should be careful not to monopolize the discussion time.
- The support group approach encourages group social activities at a variety of off-site locations. Nonetheless, to provide an appropriate and secure environment for all participants, interactions among men and women should be restricted to developing mature and healthy social relationships—romantic involvement between group members is strongly discouraged.
- Weekly support group meetings are intended to provide support, acceptance, and encouragement. And, these support groups are facilitated by volunteer facilitators only. Accordingly, this program strongly recommends that participants seek professional assistance for any issue requiring individual therapy.
- This program is intended for the benefit of all participants. But, given the diverse and unique make-up of each group, members may occasionally feel uncomfortable. Group members are encouraged to discuss their concerns with their facilitator(s).
