Support Service Provider Opportunities with MWADB

MWADB (Metro Washington Association of the Deaf-Blind has several events where they need SSP (Support Service Providers) volunteers. Check out the latest listings on the MWADB website. Contact Bruce Denhart, SSP Coordinator, to volunteer.

What you can expect when volunteering as an SSP:

  • Interpreter - Keep deaf-blind individuals active as participants by interpreting what others say in group situations like meetings, social gatherings, etc...
  • Guide - When requested, guide deaf-blind individuals to meeting of places of events, restrooms, etc.
  • Transportation - Provide transportation, help get taxi cabs or metro access rides and either ride with them or make sure that their drivers (when requested by deaf-blind individuals) have addresses of destinations.
  • Middle-man - Communicate directly with coordinators of deaf-blind meetings to find out what your specific duties are.
  • Attire - Be sure to wear a dark shirt, preferably navy blue or black.

You may be compensated for gas and/or milage. You may also be compensated with refreshments or meals at meeting sites or restaurants. Some deaf-blind individuals may offer to pay for your lunch or dinner at a restaurant.
