Guest Speaker - Billy Leavell
Billy Leavell was born deaf. He was raised in Montgomery
and Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from a private hearing
school and attended David Lipscomb College (now University)
in Nashville, TN, graduating in 1961. He immediately became
full-time minister to the deaf at Central Church of Christ
in Nashville. He held this post until 1975, when he and his
family moved to Memphis, TN to become minister for the deaf
there. He served East Frayser Church of Christ in Memphis until
1998, when he and the deaf group from East Frayser moved to
the Church of Christ at White Station. They have been there
ever since.
Billy also serves as a missionary and has gone to many different
countries like the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia,
the Czech Republic, Belize (Central America), and more often
has served in Africa, working in Kenya, Uganda, and Ghana..
He also serves as domestic missionary, traveling throughout
the United States holding gospel meetings and workshops for
the deaf.
He is editor of the publication Light for the Deaf which began
in 1966.
He is married to the former Marilyn Jean Allgood and from
this union they have had three grown children and eight grandchildren.
His hobby is drawing comic strips and collecting comic books,
which led to his work on Light for the Deaf making Bible stories
and doctrines clear for the deaf. |
