Dr. John C. Stevens - July 15, 1918 – May 1, 2007. It is with great sadness that we report the death of WW2 Chaplain, Dr. John C. Stevens. Dr. Stevens, at the time of his death, was the Abilene Christian University chancellor emeritus. He was the former ACU president, professor and historian, and longtime Abilene civic leader. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 as a chaplain with the rank of first lieutenant, attending the Army Chaplains School at Harvard University. During his three years in the Army he was awarded the European Theatre of Operations ribbons with campaign stars for Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. He also was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with two oak leaf clusters. In 1946, he was discharged with the rank of major. Dr. Stevens is pictured in a famous photograph of the 28th Infantry troops entering the Champs-Elysees in Paris during a victory parade after the city’s liberation from the Germans.

In photo to the right Dr Stephen’s presents the photograph to Chaplaincy Endorser, Jim Maxwell in 2002. Dr Steven’s was an honored guest at the dedication of the US Army’s Chaplain Museum at Fort Jackson, SC., where the photo is now displayed. Dr. Stevens held the B.A. Degree from Abilene Christian University, the M.A. and PH.D from the University of Arkansas. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Dr. Stevens was active in church and civic activities. He worshipped with South Thompson Church of Christ in Springdale, Ark., served as an elder for Central Church of Christ in Abilene, and for the past several years worshipped at University Church of Christ.
