David Cannon, Chaplain (MAJ) USAF, retired as the Deputy Wing Chaplain at Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, AL., where he served from 2003-2007 first as the Senior Protestant Chaplain and then as the Deputy Wing Chaplain. Following a year of CPE at WRAMC, he was the Sr. Protestant Chaplain at Bolling AFB, WASH DC (1998-2001). Then spent two years (2001-2003) at Brook City-Base, San Antonio, which was the location of the Air Force’s School of Aerospace Medicine, and the tech school for USAF enlisted medical personnel. During his last three assignments (1998-2007), Chaplain Cannon deployed to Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia, the Balkans, and to Uzbekistan/ Afghanistan. David is serving in a new position as the minister of involvement and education at the Hunter Hills Church of Christ in Prattville, AL (13 Miles north of Maxwell AFB). David writes that “since my wife is already working as the Church secretary that I am feeling a warm welcome from the existing staff! I finish my years in the USAF with profound thanksgiving for being a part of the Air Force family, and for making a difference in a number of peoples’ lives”.
Kurt Linge, USAF,
Chaplain (COL) Curt Linge retired as the Senior Chaplain, Arlington National Cemetery (attached to Bolling AFB, 11th Wing from June 2005 to May. Prior to that he served as the Wing Chaplain, Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB TX from July 2002 to July 2005; and Wing Chaplain at Mountain Home Air Force Base from May 1999 to July 2002 during which time in the aftermath of September 11th, 2001, he led a six month bare base ministry team at Diego Garcia during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF) serving 2400 plus service members. While stationed at Arlington National Cemetery, Curt was active in the Falls Church Church of Christ, Virginia and taught adult Bible classes on The Cross of Christ and the Book of Kings. Curt’s future work plans remain open as of this time. He is returning home to San Antonio, where he will be reunited with his wife, Barry and enjoy his four children (Neale, Allison, Adrienne and Zach) and his five grandchildren.
Reinhart Schelert, CAPT, CHC, USNR retired as the Deputy Chaplain of the Marine Corps, Reserve Matters, Navy Annex, (Chief of Chaplains Office) where he served from 2004 until 2007. Prior to that assignment, he served as the Readiness Command Midwest Chaplain, Great Lakes, IL for 3 years. Chaplain Schelert served 8 years active duty with the Navy, 4 years enlisted Air Force, and 16 with the Navy Reserve, and has been located at Rochester, MI since 1990. Reinhardt and Wanda plan to semi-retire to Albuquerque, NM next year and join their oldest daughter and her three children. They have a son in TX and a daughter and grandson living in Rochester. Chaplain Schelert recently was licensed in NM, and intends to work part-time with a Christian counseling center in Albuquerque next year and work out of the Montgomery Church of Christ
Dr. John C. Stevens - July 15, 1918 – May 1, 2007. It is with great sadness that we report the death of WW2
Chaplain, Dr. John C. Stevens. Dr. Stevens, at the time of his
death, was the Abilene Christian University chancellor emeritus. He
was the former ACU president, professor and historian, and longtime
Abilene civic leader. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 as a chaplain
with the rank of first lieutenant, attending the Army Chaplains
School at Harvard University. During his three years in the Army he
was awarded the European Theatre of Operations ribbons with campaign
stars for Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes and
Central Europe. He also was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with two
oak leaf clusters. In 1946, he was discharged with the rank of
major. Dr. Stevens is pictured in a famous photograph of the 28th
Infantry troops entering the Champs-Elysees in Paris during a
victory parade after the city’s liberation from the Germans.
In photo to
the right Dr Stephen’s presents the photograph to Chaplaincy
Endorser, Jim Maxwell in 2002. Dr Steven’s was an honored guest at
the dedication of the US Army’s Chaplain Museum at Fort Jackson,
SC., where the photo is now displayed. Dr. Stevens held the B.A.
Degree from Abilene Christian University, the M.A. and PH.D from the
University of Arkansas. In addition to his academic
responsibilities, Dr. Stevens was active in church and civic
activities. He worshipped with South Thompson Church of Christ in
Springdale, Ark., served as an elder for Central Church of Christ in
Abilene, and for the past several years worshipped at University
